Neuromodulators (Botox / Dysport)

Neuromodulators are a purified form of a naturally occurring protein

Placed strategically in overactive facial muscles, neuromodulators such as Botox Cosmetic and Dysport cause targeted relaxation of over-contracted muscles that leave the overlying skin wrinkled and creased.

Commonly treated areas with neuromodulators are the central frown lines (between the eyebrows, ie the #11s), forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, bunnies (the sides of the nose), and neck bands.  In the hands of an experienced dermatologist, it can also be used to treat mouth frowns, bumpy chins, gummy smiles, neck wrinkles, upper lip, ie lip flip),  as well as improvements in eyebrow position and eyebrow shape. Neuromodulators can be combined with dermal fillers to give the appearance of a mini face lift in the lower part of the face as well.

Are they safe?

Many patients ask us at SkinfitMD in Surrey if neuromodulators are safe. They are, and are backed by a long and well-established safety history. Botox has been widely used globally in the medical field for the effective treatment of several medical conditions for over thirty years (see Botox Therapeutic). Botox was approved in 2001 by Health Canada for wrinkle therapy and is now the most popular physician-administered cosmetic treatment in North America. Dysport is similar in that they are both purified proteins which act on muscles to cause relaxation. Dysport was approved in 2018 by Health Canada and has become a popular alternative to Botox.

SkinfitMD offers both Botox and Dysport products. During your consultation, we will discuss which product we feel is optimal for your specific concerns. When injected precisely into the muscles responsible for the dynamic wrinkles, the protein in both Botox and Dysport relaxes the muscles, preventing the creases from forming in the skin.

These injections won’t affect the sensory nerves or other elements of your facial expression, so your face won’t look frozen or feel numb after the treatment. The overall result is a younger, more relaxed-looking appearance.

A tiny amount of Botox or Dysport will be injected with a very fine needle into the specific muscles responsible for the wrinkles we are treating. There may be some minor discomfort during the injection process, which can be controlled by applying ice or, in some instances, an anaesthetic numbing cream. The procedure will take about 10 to 15 minutes. After treatment you may reapply your makeup and return to regular activities immediately. You will see results from your treatment within a few days, but wrinkles and lines will continue to diminish for up to two weeks. Effects typically last four to five months and should be repeated about two to three times per year for maintenance purposes. After repeat treatments, the effects of a Botox or Dysport injection may begin to last longer.
