Frequently Asked Questions

During an IPL treatment, a broad spectrum pulsed light penetrates the skin. This light is preferentially absorbed by the unwanted blood vessels and pigment in the skin, effectively removing them. The light is also absorbed by the collagen tissue within the dermis (deeper layer of skin) and stimulates the formation of more collagen. The end result of IPL Photorejuvenation is improved skin texture, more uniform pigmentation and revitalized skin.

A cooling gel will be first applied to the treatment area. When the IPL handpiece is held to the skin, brief pulses of intense light are emitted, with a sensation similar to an elastic band snapping against the skin. If needed, a topical anesthetic can be also be used.

After the 30-minute treatment, there will be some mild redness and possibly some swelling like you’ve experienced a sunburn. This is short-lived, so the minimal downtime means you can return to normal activities the next day as well as wear makeup.

You will need to apply sunscreen daily to minimize sun exposure and to maintain your results. Note: IPL treatments are not as effective on tanned skin and treatments should be scheduled accordingly.

The number of treatments required will be tailored to your individual needs. Most patients will require 2-5 treatments for optimum results, with maintenance treatments done periodically to maintain the excellent benefits.

SkinFitMD in Surrey, BC, offers IPL treatments with the Lumenis M22, one of the most advanced IPL systems on the market today. We are the only dermatology clinic in the Fraser Valley to currently offer this exceptional medical grade IPL technology.

Don’t be confused by “IPL therapy” promotions offered in spas and salons or on Groupon —medical-grade IPL Photorejuvenation must be provided in a physicians’ clinic and is significantly more effective than these other treatments.
