Sclerotherapy

Treat unwanted blood vessels by injecting a solution directly into the visible spider vein.

Sclerotherapy is used to treat unwanted blood vessels by injecting a solution directly into the visible spider vein.

This is a safe, common and time-proven procedure that has been used for the treatment of spider veins since the 1930s. Any number of vessels can be injected in one treatment session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sclerosing solution, a mixture of glucose and saline, is injected with a very fine needle directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to collapse. Over time the vein turns into scar tissue that is absorbed by the body, eventually disappearing or becoming barely noticeable.
  • Effectively reduces or eliminates most spider veins
  • Quick and easy nonsurgical spider vein treatment
  • Safe, time-proven method
  • Ability to treat multiple veins at once
  • Involves minimal discomfort and no bed rest
During this treatment for spider veins, the solution will be injected through a very fine needle directly into the vein. There may be some mild discomfort or cramping for a minute or two, especially if it is a larger vein. The sclerotherapy procedure will take 15 to 30 minutes.

Some blood vessels may have to be injected more than once, several weeks apart. After several sclerotherapy treatments, most patients see a 50 to 90 percent improvement. However, fading is gradual over a period of months. Elimination of spider veins is usually achieved, but similar veins may appear in the same general area.

You should be active and walk right after sclerotherapy. Some patients will be recommended to wear compression hose following vein treatment—especially if you spend a lot of time on your feet. Compression hose may decrease the number of spider vein treatments needed and the potential of recurrence.

Lasers are certainly used for treating enlarged veins, but Dr. Hong and the team at SkinfitMD find that sclerotherapy is more effective at treating small leg veins with a smaller risk of complications. In addition, sclerotherapy is less painful than laser on the veins of the leg.
As dermatologists, we are very familiar with superficial vein issues such as spider veins and broken capillaries. We will carefully assess your vein concerns and make the appropriate recommendation. Some veins may involve additional venous issues, and will require the care of a phlebologist, or vein specialist. Treatment of larger varicose veins is not offered at SkinfitMD.

Sclerotherapy is a highly technical procedure and is being offered by fewer and fewer clinics nowadays. Dr. Hong has been a regular provider of sclerotherapy services for over 15 years and has the experience to improve your concerns.
