TCA Cross
TCA CROSS is the Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars (CROSS), using Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA).
TCA Cross is a treatment where we deposit or paint small amounts of trichloroacetic acid onto the surface of specific types of scars using a small applicator or a toothpick. The TCA causes inflammation in the treatment area that stimulates new collagen fibers to form. It is generally used to treat deep scars in combination with other treatments. A series may be needed. TCA is helpful in treating Ice-pick scars, rolling scars and boxcar scars.
TCA cross allows us to treat very deep scars and not disturb the surrounding skin. It is less expensive than laser treatments.
Why should you consider SkinfitMD for TCA Cross?
TCA Cross uses a very high medical-grade acid, requiring expert skill and knowledge to use effectively and safely.Serious side effects can occur from improper TCA cross technique such as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and scarring. Dr. Hong performs all TCA Cross treatments at SkinfitMD.
Frequently Asked Questions
TCA cross works by causing inflammation in the treated area(s), which then stimulates collagen production thus improving the depth of the scar and creating a smoother skin texture.
There is a slight stinging to the skin which subsides in a few minutes. A numbing cream or local anesthetic can be used to reduce the discomfort prior to the treatment. After, the treated area will frost (become white) for up to 12 hours and the surrounding area will be pink in color. Several days later a small scab will form and will fall off the skin. It is important not to pick at the scab and we advise patients to apply small amounts of Vaseline during this time and allow the skin to shed the scab on its own. This entire process usually takes 5-7 days. A series of treatments may be needed.
